Chiloé Migratory Shorebird Conservation Plan
Due to the importance of Chiloé for migratory shorebirds and given an increasing number of threats to the critical habitats they depend upon, in 2010 a coalition of local, national and international partners led by Manomet launched the “Conservation Plan for Migratory Shorebirds in Chiloé with the support of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. The partners include the Center for Conservation and Study of Natural Heritage (CECPAN), Conservación Marina Foundation , Manomet/WHSRN Executive Office, National Audubon Society, The Nature Conservancy, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Environmental Commission (currently Ministry of the Environment).
Since its launch in 2010, the Chiloé Migratory Shorebird Plan has been implemented in five phases. Combined, these phases have enabled the conservation of the critical habitats required by shorebirds, with active participation from local communities, businesses and entrepreneurs. Increasingly, decision-makers and landowners are becoming involved in the process, good governance strategies have been developed for the management of key sites.
