Grasslands and Cattle Ranching
Grasslands are essential ecosystems that support bird populations and commercial cattle ranching. These ecosystems span large regions of the Americas and provide crucial habitats for a diverse range of species, including shorebirds. It is possible to successfully integrate the well-being of these shorebird species with sustainable cattle ranching practices.
WHY IS CATTLE RANCHING IMPORTANT FOR SHOREBIRDS?
Livestock grazing modifies the structure of natural grasslands, affecting grass height and the distribution of trees and shrubs. This has a direct impact on shorebirds, as they require short grasses, generally less than 10 cm tall, to find food. Controlled grazing and the use of fire are key tools for maintaining this type of habitat. However, the expansion of agriculture and some intensive livestock practices are not compatible with the conditions necessary for these birds.
Promoting sustainable ranching practices that maintain the natural structure of grasslands is fundamental to conserving shorebirds and preserving these ecosystems.
BEST PRACTICES FOR RECONCILING SHOREBIRD HABITAT WITH CATTLE RANCHING
To ensure the survival of shorebirds in grasslands, good agricultural practices should focus on maintaining areas with short grasses and abundant food. The presence of nearby forest cover can reduce the quality of habitat for these birds by increasing their vigilance for potential predators, limiting the time they spend feeding.
However, it is equally crucial to consider the productive needs of ranchers, whose livelihoods depend on the efficiency of their operations. Finding a balance between production and conservation is key; there is no point in promoting practices beneficial to birds that are unviable for farmers. We must be innovative and flexible in our approach to ranching systems, seeking opportunities for mutual benefit.
One strategy we are adopting is ecological intensification, an approach that balances increased productivity with environmental conservation. This involves improving production efficiency without compromising natural resources and essential shorebird habitats, ensuring sustainable management from environmental, economic, and productive standpoints. For this, we integrate local knowledge of producers, agronomists, and published scientific information.
