Overview
La Desembocadura y Estuario del Río Maipo is located between the towns of San Antonio and Santo Domingo in the San Antonio Province, Region of Valparaiso, Chile. The approximately 140-hectare (346-acre) site includes sections of beach, sand bars, estuary, grasslands, wetlands, shrublands, dunes, and river mouth. A total of 132 species of birds have been recorded within this ecosystem, plus many fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals.
The area was designated a WHSRN Site of Regional Importance for hosting more than 1% of the biogeographic population of two species: Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) and the pitanay subspecies of American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus).
