Manomet Small Grants for Conservation of Neotropical Shorebirds

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I apply to the Small Grants if I am from a country in the Neotropics, reside outside the region and my project will be carried out in my country of origin?

Yes, you can apply. It is important that you are a national or resident of one of the countries and territories of the Neotropics and that your project is implemented in the same geography.

2. Can I apply to the Small Grants if I am a citizen of a country outside the Neotropics and my project will be developed in the Neotropics?

If you are a resident of a country or territory in the Neotropics you can apply to the Small Grants. Unfortunately, if you are not a resident or national of a country or territory of the Neotropics, you cannot apply even if your project will be developed in one of the countries or territories of the Neotropics.

3. I am a university student, and I am not formally linked to any conservation institution, can I apply?

Yes, you can apply without officially belonging to any conservation institution. However, your project should be supported and have the endorsement of a research and/or conservation institution, or a formal institution with an impact on the site of work, or in the field of work in which your project is framed.

4. I am not clear if the species I have in mind to apply to the Small Grants is the appropriate one

The species and populations that the Small Grants program focuses on are those that are restricted to the Neotropics, with priority given to species of global or regional conservation concern. For more clarity on the species and populations that could be included in proposals to the Small Grants please review the list here

5. Can I apply if my project focuses on genetic analyses of shorebird populations?

Yes, you can apply if the results of your project identify conservation benefits for the shorebird populations you will analyze.

6. My project site does not have WHSRN designation, can I apply?

You can apply if your site has the potential to qualify for WHSRN status (see https://whsrn.org/why-whsrn/is-my-site-eligible/).

7. Can I apply if my project focuses on the shorebird assemblage of my site of interest without identifying any particular species?

You cannot apply if you cannot identify within the shorebird assemblage at least one of the Small Grants focal species. Remember that focal species are those shorebird species and populations that breed in the Neotropics. To be clear about the focal species, please review the list here.

8. Can I submit my proposal in French, Dutch, or another language?

Yes, but please note that we will use an artificial intelligence translator to evaluate an English, Spanish or Portuguese version of your proposal (depending on the language of the assigned reviewer). You can also use www.Deepl.com to translate into any of the three languages in which we prefer to receive proposals

9. Is it possible to submit a proposal as a team or is it imperative that it is only one person?

It is possible for the proposal to be submitted by all members of a team. However, all members must be individuals who are beginning their conservation career in the Neotropics. It is also imperative that the proposal be submitted by individuals and not by institutions or organizations

10. Can we submit the proposal on behalf of an organization?

It is not possible to submit a proposal on behalf of an organization. You may submit the proposal on behalf of yourself or yourself and others accompanying the work. However, all team members must be individuals who are beginning their conservation careers in the Neotropics.

11. Can I apply to the Manomet Small Grants program if I was granted a Manomet Small Grant in the past?

No, at this time it is not possible to apply for Small Grants again if you have already received support before.

12.  My project would be at a WHSRN site where another person had previously received a Small Grant, can I apply?

Of course you can apply, if your approach and your project are different from the person who previously obtained a Small Grant.
