Map of Important Shorebird Sites
Identifying important sites is the first step to conserving habitat for shorebirds.
This interactive map was created to help stakeholders identify gaps in knowledge, facilitate information sharing, and determine if a site meets WHSRN criteria. Once it has been established that a site meets criteria, a WHSRN nomination can be pursued to safeguard the sites by engaging stakeholders and improving conservation action.
Use the filters to sort the sites by species, flyway, and criteria. Results from queries can be exported to be analyzed further. Clusters of four or more sites within 10 kilometers of each other can also be explored. Having multiple data points in close proximity to each other can help strengthen a WHSRN nomination covering one or more sites within a cluster.
Is your site missing? Use the survey form to suggest a site for inclusion or to provide an update to an existing site.
The shorebird data used to create this interactive map are from a variety of sources, including published literature, eBird, census data from monitoring programs, and IBA factsheets. WHSRN criteria was applied to the data to identify these key sites, using minimum thresholds of 20,000 shorebirds or 1% of the biogeographic population of a species.
